Fellowship is open to young ophthalmologists from all over the world who wish to conduct basic or clinical research at a university of their choice. The ICO has a commitment to enhance ophthalmic education, improve eye care, and contribute to the conservation and restoration of vision worldwide.

To fulfill this obligation, the ICO provides instructional programs and projects to strengthen and promote ophthalmic education, particularly in developing countries.

Eligibility Criteria for the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) Fellowship

  • Required Language: English
  • Eligible Countries: All World Countries.
  • Research Requirements:
    • Please provide information about your previous work in the relevant field of the application.
    •  Kindly share your comprehensive CV, which should include a detailed list of publications along with the impact factors.
    • We would appreciate it if you could arrange an endorsement from your current program director for this application.
    • Before submitting your application, please ensure that the chosen host university is feasible.
    • Please provide a detailed description of how you plan to continue your research work during the fellowship.
    • As part of your application, please include a sustainability statement that confirms your ability to return to your current position after the fellowship. This statement should be endorsed by your current program director.
  • Basic Requirements:
    • Applicants are required to complete at least 12 months of research training.
    • The online application can be found on the ICO website.
    • Research work applications are currently being accepted for the following sub-specialties: Glaucoma, Neuro-Ophthalmology, Pediatric Ophthalmology, Retina, Tumours, Uveitis, Dry Eye, and Cornea.
    • A copy of the ophthalmology specialist exam must be successfully passed by the applicant.
    • Additionally, the applicant should be reasonably fluent in the language of the fellowship training center.
    • At the time of applying, the applicant must be under 40 years of age.
    • The ICO recommends that candidates pass one or more ICO exams, which will be considered during the assessment of applications, consider this in the assessment of applications from HERE.
    • Applicants from countries with ophthalmologic societies that are members of the ICO will receive special consideration.

How to Apply for an International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) Fellowship?

To apply for the fellowship, kindly follow the instructions provided below:

1. If you don’t have an ICO Account, create one.

2. Choose a Fellowship: Once you’ve identified your country, the ICO Fellowship(s) you’re eligible for will be displayed.

3. Complete Eligibility Check: You’ll be asked to provide information to determine if you’re eligible to receive the selected ICO Fellowship.

4. ICO Eligibility Review: Your eligibility will be determined after you submit your information to the ICO. You’ll be notified of the decision and asked to complete the application or informed that you’re not eligible.

5. Apply to a Host Training Center: If you’re eligible, you’ll choose and apply to a host. Keep in mind that you may only apply to one host at a time.

6. Host Application Review: The host you’ve chosen will review your request. If accepted, you’ll need to confirm the details agreed upon between you and the host. If your request is declined, you’ll need to select another host.

7. Fellowship Application Submitted: You’ll receive a notification that your application is complete and will be reviewed by the appropriate ICO Fellowship Committee.
